In the news today, the damage being done by the Fukushima nuclear plant may be largely contained... but maybe not for long. The buildings that suffered meltdowns produce about 160 tons of contaminated water per day, and there_s a radioactive isotope in it that purification can_t remove. Currently, over a MILLION tons of that water is being held in storage tanks, but they_re near capacity. And one of the options being considered to make space is to dilute and release that water into the sea Have we learned nothing from Godzilla movies? Speaking of environmental disasters, humanity_s a big one A new study reveals that by biomass, humans account for just ONE TEN-THOUSANDTH of all life on the planet... yet we_ve caused the loss of EIGHTY-THREE PERCENT of all wild mammals and HALF of plants That said, plants are still holding relatively strong: they make up EIGHTY-TWO percent of all life on Earth, with BACTERIA accounting for THIRTEEN percent, and EVERYTHING ELSE making up the other five. On the plus side, I guess that means 99-point-9-9 percent of life on Earth is naked And here_s where we are politically: SWEDEN is preparing for war The Swedish government is sending all its citizens a twenty-page pamphlet entitled If crisis or war comes. It contains both survival techniques and instructions on how to help with Sweden_s defense. It_s literally been centuries since Sweden went to war, but with the Russians recently making incursions into their airspace and territorial waters, I guess better safe than sorry. And undercover definitely seems to be the right word for it That was Cambridge Analytica_s chief exec Alexander Nix talking about using sex to create dirt on politicians, and in the same meeting, he talked about setting up politicians with fake bribes Now they_re under investigation by the UK_s Information Commissioner, so I hope they enjoyed those Ukrainian girls when they had the chance Meanwhile, Facebook_s role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal caused their stock price to take a big dive The company suffered its biggest drop in share price by percentage in four years, tumbling by nearly SEVEN PERCENT, or about THIRTY-SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS Technically, what Cambridge Analytica did, violated Facebook_s rules, but people are now leaving the social media site while others are calling for it to be more regulated. Personally, I_d settle for no bots So now that we_ve reminded you that some companies are the worst, here_s some incentive to rat on them Three whistleblowers who tipped off the S.E.C. about Merrill Lynch misusing customer funds, just earned themselves a cool EIGHTY-THREE MILLION dollars If I_m doing the math right, that_s twenty percent of Merrill Lynch_s four hundred and fifteen million dollar settlement and also the largest whistleblower award EVER Madison. Thanks Laura, cigarettes may be headed towards the ashtray of history According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of Americans who smoke has hit an all-time recorded low. A little less than fourteen percent of American adults are smoking, which is pretty impressive considering the rate was over twenty percent as recently as 2009. It_s not quite legalized weed, but for the first time ever, the FDA has approved a drug that uses an active ingredient derived from marijuana. Now, before we get too excited, Epidiolex is a treatment for seizures caused by two rare forms of epilepsy. AND it doesn_t contain the marijuana component that gets you high Still, this could open the door for more pot-based medicines and make it easier to do research. I always assumed everyone watched Making a Murderer, but it seems the US Supreme Court missed it. The Justices passed up the chance to review Brendan Dassey_s case without giving an explanation. As fans of the Netflix series know, there are a lot of questions surrounding Dassey_s confession to committing rpg and murder with his uncle. His lawyers argue the confession was coerced and that Dassey is borderline intellectually disabled. But for now, he_ll continue serving his life sentence... and the plot just thickened for Season Two Stay tuned for more Naked News

We sketched the face of one our fellow anchors to test our skills Can you tell me who THIS is?Well, sketching the likeness of a wanted CRIMINAL is not as easy as it seems... or is it? Eila Adams has got the story to lead off this week_s Odds N Ends.Sometimes, even the world_s worst sketch artist can get it right. A witness to a theft in Lancaster, Pennsylvania gave a drawing to police that even they called amateur and cartoonish. However, along with the physical description and the nature of the crime, the sketch of the culprit was enough to jog the memory of one of the officers involved They showed the picture to a witness, who positively IDed the suspect. Pretty amazing right That_s what I call a SKETCHY character The Utah State Bar recently had to issue an apology after emailing every lawyer in the state a picture of a topless woman Now, they WERE advertising their Spring Convention, but I_m pretty sure no one has ever mistaken the Utah lawyers_ Spring Convention with SPRING BREAK Though I would now expect a major surge in attendance: Come for the symposia, stay for the Mormons making it RAIN Utah may not be the furthest place from Philadelphia, GEOGRAPHICALLY, but spiritually, it_s got to be right up there Which is probably why this _Fresh Prince_ parody made by the Utah House of Representatives is the kind of cringeworthy you can_t look away from Okay, I_m a naked blonde... and even I_m overwhelmed by how white that was Looks like Utah_s got 99 Problems... and 75 of them are State Representatives That_s all for now, I_ll send you back to Laura and Whitney for more, Naked News.
